As we have pointed out, Canada's health system faces some of these issues as well, including underfunding of health care through a combination of inadequate funding, a lack of transparency in expenditures and a culture of underinvestment in medical services. But there are some additional concerns. In Canada, we face an oversupply of services, which is causing patients to seek care in Canada and elsewhere for what they want rather than what they should.

In Canada, we have become very used to the availability of quality medical care and the quality of health care, as evidenced by the fact that patients in Canada are among the healthiest in the world and are among the least expensive health care system of all industrialized nations. But, while some of the problems in the United States are attributable to a lack of transparency around federal spending, a lack of adequate financing for health care and overspending, the problems of Canada are much, much worse. In addition to its problems related to oversupply of services, Canada also faces difficulties in addressing the issue of underutilization of health care services. Canada spends much more per dollar on health care.

According to the Fraser Institute, the United States is the most inefficient and underutilized healthcare system in the world. United States is the only country with a population in which less people receive health care than are currently enrolled in it. In other words, as in the United States, the percentage of the population that is not enrolled or is not enrolled in an adequate program of health care will continue to grow.

In the United States, about 20% of the population is uninsured. The Fraser Institute has found that Canada is spending the second-least on healthcare of the countries it compares. For example, the United States is facing a massive shortage of doctors. The American Medical Association estimates that there are 6-7 million uninspected emergency room visits annually, and the American Society of Anesthesiologists estimates that a similar number are needed every year. Canada is not in this difficult of a position, with a population roughly the same size as the United States, but it is facing similar problems.

As in the US, health care has become too expensive for most Canadians, as the cost of medical education is far beyond what most Canadians are comfortable paying. As a result, Canadians seem to have become much more reluctant to seek care, even for the most common medical needs, such as a heart attack or a broken arm, and to have an emergency room for these issues. The Canadian health care system has also become much more complicated by the adoption of new insurance rules by many private employers. Many are required to cover health care expenses in excess of a certain threshold, and some health care organizations are required to offer coverage to large groups of workers. Some have argued that this creates a disincentive for workers to seek care and therefore reduces the number of hospital visits for minor injuries, and thus lowers costs. Another bestsellers is that most Canadians can obtain care at an affordable cost only if they can purchase insurance, and most Americans lack coverage. With a rising population, Canadians will need to pay more in insurance premiums, and this will reduce the number of care visits for minor injuries.
