Women's health the number of red blood cells and other red blood cells is increased and maintained at a constant level, it may be thought that erythromycin reduces the amount of hemoglobin available in the blood. The opposite may be true; erythropoietin may actually increase the amount of hemoglobin in the blood. The effect of treatment of erythropoietin has not been studied in a clinical context, and the results of this information have not been established in any specific patients.
The use of erythropoietin in the treatment of sepsis is not as simple as the use of erythropoietin alone to treat sepsis. In women's health the treatment of sepsis, erythropoietin also stimulates the erythrocyte's production of albumin. However, albumin levels are not required or even desirable, unless the erytospermum or sperm are very large.
In the treatment of severe sepsis, the addition of erythromycin reduces the amount of albumin available in the red blood cells. In most cases the erythropoietin dose is very small. Although the use of erythropoietin has been a popular and well-known method in the treatment of sepsis, it is important to note that most patients in the early stages of sepsis respond very well to intravenous erythropoietin. Pertinent to the article is the fact that a person who has received a red blood cell transfusion may be able to continue to receive that transfusion in future life, whereas those that have developed severe anemia can no longer do so. In this way, we can maintain patients' blood cell supply and avoid any complications with respect to red blood cell donation. The article notes that the red cell count of a kidney transplant recipient can be restored through a combination of erythropoietin and a transfusion with a platelet concentrate. However, it is not clear how much of a difference erythropoietin makes in achieving the same result as transfusion with a platelet concentrate does, and this is a matter of controversy that the authors do not touch upon.
The authors are not saying that the patient will not ever become able to receive a red blood cell transfusion, only that it will no longer be necessary. The problem for the donor is the same. The only difference is that the patient has become immune-suppressed, and in this regard, the treatment is identical. In the event of a transfusion, all patients with severe red cell deficiencies should be carefully monitored, especially because it is not yet known how well the immune system maintains blood cell levels in such patients. He also has a site where he has put a few of his own articles, such as this and this. It's a long list and, to me, a bit of a mystery as to what he's doing with the time. The Loomis paper deals with the effects of intravenous administration and intravenous blood transfusion on the levels of several metabolites, and has the added benefit of including a description of the procedure used to administer erythropoietin in these situations.
